The 25 best Maldives resorts, ranked

Ranked by overall quality, value for money, and booking volume through our platform. Last updated May 2026.

Soneva Jani
1

Soneva Jani

Noonu Atoll·40-min seaplane
From
$3500/night

Best overall: largest overwater villa fleet, sustainability leader, Noonu seclusion.

Best for

Couples seeking supreme privacy, sustainability-conscious travellers, anyone wanting the definitive overwater-villa experience.

⚠ Consider

45-min seaplane means a late-arriving flight = transit hotel night.

2

Best design: a living contemporary-art destination with a world-class spa programme.

Best for

Design-forward couples, second-or-third-time Maldives visitors, anyone whose trip should feel cultural rather than just relaxing.

⚠ Consider

Price gap to next-best resort isn't always justified by room alone — you're paying for the curation.

Cheval Blanc Randheli
3
From
$3500/night

Best French luxury: LVMH's only Maldives resort, Michelin-level dining, fashion-forward interiors.

Best for

Travellers who weight food as the #1 criterion; luxury travellers familiar with Cheval Blanc globally.

⚠ Consider

Very few overwater villas; garden villas feel undersold at this price.

Velaa Private Island
4
From
$3700/night

Most exclusive: 47 villas, private golf, a dedicated submarine — genuine ultra-luxury.

Best for

UHNW guests wanting the most private island in the country; multi-generational groups who'll book the whole island.

⚠ Consider

Minimum spend often mandated in peak season; not suitable for first-time Maldives visitors on a tight schedule.

5

Best butler service: three natural islands, the largest villa in the Maldives, unrivalled privacy architecture.

Best for

Honeymooners and couples needing guaranteed seclusion; butler-service junkies.

⚠ Consider

Three-island scale means some dining is a buggy or boat ride away.

Soneva Fushi
6

Soneva Fushi

Baa Atoll·30-min seaplane
From
$3500/night

Most authentic barefoot luxury: the original no-news, no-shoes Maldives resort still sets the template.

Best for

Families who want sustainability experiences that actually engage kids; couples looking for the least resort-like resort.

⚠ Consider

Rooms vary enormously in quality between older and newer villas; book carefully.

The Nautilus Maldives
7
From
$950/night

Most intimate: adults-only, 26 residences, entirely tailored to your routine.

Best for

Couples or solo travellers who want everything on their own schedule with no set mealtimes.

⚠ Consider

No kids, limited activities for non-divers.

One&Only Reethi Rah
8
From
$3000/night

Best beach resort: 5 km of beaches, the largest land area in North Malé — a beach-first stay.

Best for

Travellers who prioritise sand over water, active guests, families.

⚠ Consider

House reef is average; divers will prefer other properties.

Six Senses Laamu
9
From
$1450/night

Best surf + dive combination: Southern Atoll seclusion with a genuine board-sports programme.

Best for

Divers and surfers; nature-focused travellers; anyone wanting to avoid the North Malé Atoll crowd.

⚠ Consider

Remote location (domestic flight + speedboat) adds 3+ hours to arrival day.

10

Best architecture: the dinosaur-shaped underwater bar is iconic; villas are genuinely stunning.

Best for

Architecture and design enthusiasts; travellers who want a dramatic resort aesthetic.

⚠ Consider

Dhaalu Atoll is remote; domestic flight required.

Gili Lankanfushi
11
From
$1262/night

Best barefoot-luxury value: adults-only, overwater focus, no TV policy, consistently excellent food.

Best for

Adults-only couples; anyone wanting a second-tier price with first-tier service.

⚠ Consider

Limited land space; not ideal for guests who like to walk.

12

Best new resort: the Fari Islands development delivers a marina village feel unlike any other.

Best for

Travellers who want resort + real-world atmosphere; F&B enthusiasts.

⚠ Consider

Multi-resort complex means it's busier than a private island.

From
$900/night

Best wellness: COMO Shambhala spa, exceptional diving, Thaa Atoll remoteness.

Best boutique stay: 33 dhoni suites on a tiny island — the most romantic small resort on this list.

Honeymooners; couples wanting a resort that feels genuinely un-commercialised.

⚠ Consider

No beach (dhoni suites only); not great for beach lovers.

16

Best contemporary design: Fari Islands contemporary architecture with a genuine cultural programme.

Best for

Younger luxury travellers; guests who find traditional luxury aesthetics stale.

⚠ Consider

Shares the Fari development with the Ritz; not a private island.

Best for

Budget-conscious luxury travellers; divers who want a quiet atoll; independent travellers.

⚠ Consider

Remote (domestic flight + speedboat); limited villa variety.

JOALI BEING
18

JOALI BEING

Baa Atoll·40-min seaplane
From
$3995/night

Best wellness resort: 68 villas on a Raa Atoll island with a serious immunity-focused spa.

Best for

Wellness-focused travellers who want a dedicated programme rather than a spa add-on.

⚠ Consider

Wellness positioning means it's not for guests who want nightlife.

W Maldives
19

W Maldives

North Ari Atoll·25-min seaplane
From
$1200/night

Best party resort: North Ari Atoll location, energetic F&B, the best pool party in the country.

Best for

Younger couples; groups; travellers who want energy rather than silence.

Wellness guests will find the energy levels jarring.

20

Best underwater dining: Stars below water level + Baa Atoll access to manta and whale sharks.

Best for

Special-occasion guests; couples celebrating milestones; serious snorkellers.

⚠ Consider

Below-water restaurant is expensive and needs booking months in advance.

Best for first-timers: iconic underwater restaurant, two islands, well-worn path for first Maldives trips.

Best for

First-time Maldives visitors; multi-generational families; travellers who want a globally-recognisable name.

⚠ Consider

Well-known = popular; the resort feels busier than the top 10.

22

Best family value: 1.6 km island, 5 pools, house reef, and rates under USD 500/night.

Best for

Families; budget-conscious couples; travellers who want variety on a single island.

⚠ Consider

Not ultra-luxury; the sheer size (180+ villas) means it can feel busy.

23

Best retro-glam: vintage-inspired interiors, an excellent all-inclusive, and a young-at-heart energy.

Best for

Couples who like personality over minimalism; groups; all-inclusive fans.

⚠ Consider

Retro aesthetic isn't for everyone; house reef is average.

How the transfer affects your stay

The Maldives is a 99% water country. How you reach your resort matters more than first-time visitors expect.

Speedboat

15–80 km from MLE
Atolls: North & South Malé, Lhaviyani

Most reliable. Runs after dark — late flights are fine. Usually included in room rate.

Seaplane

25–55 min flight from MLE
Atolls: Baa, Raa, Noonu, Ari Atolls

The bucket-list image. Does NOT fly after sunset. 20 kg bag limit enforced.

Domestic flight + speedboat

45–80 min domestic + 30–60 min boat
Atolls: Laamu, Gaafu, Addu

Adds 3+ hours to arrival day. Accesses the country's quietest, least-visited atolls.

Why our list is different

amaldives.com is run by a team based in Malé. We hold direct booking contracts with 200+ Maldivian resorts and 900+ guesthouses. The team includes former resort GMs, current dive instructors, and people whose families have lived on the local islands in our guesthouse coverage.

We don't sell rankings. The resorts above appear in this order because we've placed guests in every one of them in the past 18 months. When a resort moves up or down it's because the on-property experience changed — not because of an advertising arrangement.
